PHED impounds trucks over destruction of property

    The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution, PHED, has impounded three freight haulage trucks conveying goods from the Port Terminal for destroying electrical installations in Onne.

    The incident occurred on their way to Enugu State en route Igbo Etche on Tuesday, March 29, 2022.

    It was gathered that the three haulage vehicles belonging to Gosconsa Nigeria Limited with plate numbers (ABG 510 XF, RUM 09 XA and RUM 100XA) failed to follow due process as contained in the company’s policy and procedure for issuance of permit to grant access to haulage trucks.

    The company’s policy and procedure for issuance of permit requires contractors to officially request for permission in writing on the kilometers to be covered on their journey or the type of work to be done in the case of projects to be executed.

    The policy further stated that the NEMSA-licensed contractors were the only contractors certified to handle such repairs when customers decide to handle repairs by themselves.

    Nigeria News Flight gathered that the destruction caused by the trucks was giving concern to PHED as its customers had been plunged into darkness amid the national grid crises, which the company had been trying to manage in the last two weeks.

    “It is quite regrettable that Gosconsa Nigeria Limited has irresponsibly destroyed electrical assets worth millions of naira in a bid to escape laid down procedures, yet provided military escort for their haulage.

    “Unbelievably, the company claimed to have obtained a haulage permit from sources unknown to PHED,” a source said.

    Consequently, the matter had since been reported to the police, and the freight trucks impounded and under-going investigation.

    The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution, PHED, Plc has therefore appealed to the general public to help protect critical electricity infrastructure by reporting activities of persons and corporate organisations whose actions were detrimental to the stable power supply.
